Understanding Childhood Cancer
Did you know that even babies can get cancer? Childhood cancer, affecting children under 18, including those who are still in the womb, is influenced by genetics and environmental factors. According to the World Child Cancer, over 5,000 kids are expected to develop cancer each year in Indonesia. Despite its small percentage, the threat of cancer still brings a devastating impact on these innocent children.
Given the significant challenges posed by childhood cancer, our Indonesian team wanted to make a meaningful difference through our corporate social responsibility programme. On 9 August, Friday, we visited the children at the YKAKI (Indonesia Care For Kids Cancer Foundation) in Jakarta bearing gifts and donations.
Background of Foundation
The YKAKI (Indonesia Care For Kids Cancer Foundation) is a non-profit organisation that helps children with cancer from underprivileged families in Indonesia. Established in 2018 by Mrs Sallyana Sorongan and her friends, who initially formed a community in 2004 to help children in need, YKAKI has since supported over 5,000 child cancer fighters.
Currently, there are approximately 25 children at the Jakarta facility, aged from as young as four months old to 17 years old. Each child has their own caregiver to attend to their needs.
YKAKI believes that every child with cancer deserves adequate care and treatment. To that end, it collaborates with several Indonesian hospitals to distribute the assistance provided by donors.
Our Visit
Our visit to the YKAKI was filled with meaningful activities. We started with a warm welcome from the foundation, followed by a speech from our Indonesia Country Manager, Ms Feri. The team spent time interacting with the children by playing educational games that brought smiles and laughter to their faces.
As we got to know the children and their individual challenges, we gained a deeper understanding on childhood cancer. This made us realise the incredible resilience that these strong cancer warriors face. This deeper understanding of their experiences led us to want to support their ongoing needs in a meaningful way.
Donating for a Better Future
One of the key items desperately needed from the YKAKI was a fridge. Recognising this need, we donated a two-door refrigerator to help the foundation store food items properly. In addition to the fridge, we provided essential items such as baby formula, diapers, vitamins, fruits and snacks. These donations aim to improve the quality of life for the children and to support the foundation’s efforts in providing care.
A Visit to Remember
“Visiting the Indonesian Children's Cancer Foundation was a humbling experience. The resilience and spirit of these children inspire us to continue supporting their fight against cancer,” remarked Ms Feri. “We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute and hope our efforts will help the foundation to better care for these children.”
The visit ended with a heartwarming photo session. Seeing the smiles on the children’s faces reminded us of the power of hope and community. We aspire to support similar communities and witness more of these genuine smiles in the future.
